Project LionWalk

As part of our Home Ec curriculum this year,
We are learning about fashion from far and near,
We made a dress out of a t-shirt and jeans,
This morning was the Fashion Show, I was full of beans.

Every dress was amazing, describe,
maybe we would win if we handed in a bribe.
I especiall loved the black Swan Dress,
But all of the others were out to impress.

I was so proud to be a part of TY,
I still love ours, I am not going to lie,
we based ours on the movie the Lion King,
Raawwry was a furios thing!

It was a PROPer Experience

The Sound of Music is unfortunately finished,
But the Musical Atmosphere hasn't diminished,
Four nights of fun, I will always remember,
but its time to move on and enjoy december.

I was in charge of Mics and that king of thing,
I stood back stage and heard everybody sing,
At intervals we all had so much craic,
What I would do just go back.

To the States with no Mates

Here is my Christmas Essay,
Its on a book not a play,
I could not write it in a rhyme,
Or else it wouldn't be in on time.

'Brooklyn' by Colm Toibin

In the novel, 'Brooklyn' by Colm Toibin (Winner of Costa prize) there are many characters which struck me. The book is rich in features such as style, themes, plots, characters and cultural context. These charcters include the mother, the sister Rose, the boyfriend Tony, the landlady and of course the main character Eilis.

The novel in centred around Eilis' flee and lack of desire for this flee to America. I watched Eilis' character develop from a 'small-town girl', a home-bird, simply a girl who couldn't live without her constant dependance on her family to a lady hitting Brooklyn with a – wind, that becomes a storm. Eilis becomes an independant, headstrong and confident woman compared to the girl who  “ had always presumed that she would live in the town all her life, as her mother had done, knowing everyone, having the same friends and neighbors, the same routines in the same streets,” Toibin writes. “She had expected that she would find a job in the town, and then marry someone and give up the job and have children. Now, she felt that she was being singled out for something for which she was not in any way prepared.” It is clear that Toibin wants us to show us that a place can change a person.

Eilis also changes from an innocent and vulnerable character to showing her true colours. She marries an Italian in New York but doesn't tell anybody. We gradually realise that she is not as innocent as she was when living in her small home town. She goes home to Enniscorthy when tragedy hits her family. Eilis meets local boy called Jim, begins to fall in love with him and soon enough the memory of her husband seems to be a blurred dream, it is very clear that she does not have extremely strong feelings for him. Eilis is left in predicament that only she can decide what to do. Eilis's character developed a lot throughout the book. She is an extremely complex xharacter and she was effected by a change of place and a change of people.

The plot in the novel at the begining is about Eilis's change from a small country town to a big city all on her own. It about the huge changes in her surroundings, her relationships and her day-to-day life. We see her realtionship with her sister Rose and her mother take a step back. We don't here much from the except the few letters. Instead her landlady, her coworkers, her room mates and her boyfriend Tony take charge. It is hard to imagine a young girl moving from a job in the local show on Sundays to a huge Department store that is facing the introduction of different coloured skin tights. It is very clear to me that Brooklyn is way ahead of Enniscorthy.

When in New York Eilis is also faced by the huge shock of the death of her older sister. Because Eilis's father died when they were young, Rose looked after Eilis when she was growing up. The tragedy of Rose's sudden death shocks Eilis to the core and turns her world upside down. Eilis leaves Brooklyn to go home and when she arrives we are questioned. Will Eilis ever return to Tony? Or will she leave the life she always expected in her home town? I was intrigues by the suspense that left me wondering what would happen but it didn't take too long to uncover what was going to happen. The plot was extremely interesting as it was relevant to the period in time but similarly it wasn't all about history which I liked.

The world of the text is extremely interesting as it is relevant to my ancestprs and to so many other people's. My great grandparents met eachother while trying to find work in America in the 1900s. I am not a huge fan of history books but this was dufferent. The main point of the book was not history. I got a taste of life in the 1950s but it wasn't the only thing in the book. It really appealed to me the rfact that communication was so underdeveloped. Today it is so easy to contact a person but in that time it was expensive, long and a lot of effort just to send a person a letter. I was also intrigued and amazed at the huge ordeal when the department store began to sell dark skin-toned tights. This was a big deal for the time and it was interestig to see people's reactions to this.

The style of Colm Toibin was may favourite thing about this read. The story came from a third person and so we got everybody's thoughts and feelings on everythiong that happened. I understood everybody's feelings but simultaneously there was still an element of mystery in the novel. From reading the previous paragraphs I am sure you have noticed that contrast is the biggest and most effective tachnique used by Toibon. The contrast in Jim and Tony, the contrast in Enniscorthy and Brooklyn and the contrast between the character of Eilis at the beginning, middle and end of the novel. The contrast clearly shows how much things have changed in the novel.

Characterisation and imagery are also strong themes in the novel. The characters all have their own unique personality and lives and Toibin does an outstanding job achieveing this. While reading the book I was pulled into the characters' traits and lives. Imagery is an excellent, common but excellent technique in any novel. At key moments in the novel imagery is used to make the momnet seem more realistic to the reader. This definitely happened to me. I became enchanted by the scenes. Toibin appealed to all of the senses to do so.

There are many themes in this novel such as love, emmigration and death. The theme that appealed to me most was emmigration. This stood out the most for me as it is a theme that I have not noticed in any other book that I have read. I usually do not like books about history but the fact that it was so realistic. The theme showed how emmigration affected a typical family. The family is not a particularly poor, rich or unusaul family which makes the theme so special. We see how a young dependant girl has to move out and step into the big bad world. It is anadventure for the character and the reader.

Overall I really loved tis book. It was so rich in style, characters, themes, plots and cultural context. I would definitely recommend the novel 'Brooklyn' by Colm Toibin because of all of its fanatastic features.

A Day With Logan

Loagn came to take some pics, 

Shanen and I showed him the tricks,

We introduced him to the school,

He honestly thought it was really cool.

He loved the teachers most of all,

And how the school wasn't to small,

And our relationship with our teachers,

He was also impressed by all the features.

We kept on bumping in to all the staff,

We even had a really good laugh,

Then we had a cup of tea,

It was the best, Shanen will agree.

I will always remember our day walking around,

And of course that Logan is really sound,

Best day in TY so far,

Bake Sale, We didn't fail!

Class Eriu held a bake sale, 
So now I will tell you the tale,
It was a great day for all,
All the stands were in the hall.


The bake sale was for a business we set up,
And we made the most money - yup
We all brought in so much food,
Chocolate puts students in a good mood.


Thanks to all who bought some stuff,
And I apologize if there wasn't enough.

Neven Heaven

Last week I went off to the kitchen,

I was so nervous - I was almost itchin',

Neven Maguire is a brilliant cook,

He even has lots of books.

I've cooked so much - You wouldn't believe,

I never thought I could even achieve.

I cooked as much as any other staff,

And everybody was up for a laugh.

We listened to Music and always joked,

I was always scared if a customer choked.

I made mushroom popcorn and meringues with beetroot,

I made so many meals with the coolest fruit.

I always wore my chef whites,

I didn't even mind working the nights,

Definitely the best week of my life, 

And only one little cut with the tip of a knife.

Words can't describe the week I had, 

So ask me questions I'd be glad,

Wish I was there right this minute,

If I were you its a CV I'd submit.

So we went to see an opera,
A big day for all, a day to bring a camera,
The singers weren't as good as me,
My shower-head, singing glee.


It was a tad to long, 
But I loved to hear every song,
Comfortable were the seats,
We even brought popcorn and treats.

English Assignment: JATP - The Production

Juno and the Paycock : The Production

As we set off to see the much anticipated production of Juno and the Paycock, I wondered would it compare to the play we read in class. I was hoping it would as I found it difficult to imagine the setting, the tones and the moods of the play from reading in class.

Well the productiom most definitely did beat reading the book. The acting, the delivery of the lines, the set and the themes and issues raised impressed me very much.

The acting in the play was by far the aspect of the production that I was most impressed with. I felt that the actors Joxer, Mary and Johnny shone the most. From their perfected accents to their strong and powerful delivery of lines, in my opinion they stole the attention. Joxer's gestures matched his lines perfectly. Usually he performed as a drunken man and so his slurred words and messy gestures clearly displayed his lack of seriousness and focus on life. The character Mary was a total contrast to the character of Joxer. Althoug they rarely performed on stage togeteher, the contrast in their characters highlighted their traits. Joxer's scruffed clothes and appearance was highlighted by Mary's neat, polished demeanor. In my opinion, Johnny was not a very important character while reading the play but his powerful presence on stage definitely made a huge difference to the play. Although he did not say as much as other characters but his reactions and gestures made his part extremely important. Although I enjoyed all the character's performances and I commend the choices mad to choose these characters, the characters of Joxer, mary and Johnny were my favourite. Their characterisations made the play a success in my eyes.

The set in the production did what it was supposed to do and so much more. It appealed to my visual senses. The dull colours, the old and unmatching furniture conveyed the financal state of the Boyle family. The stairs behind the set and doors made the set seem more realistic. Although everybody was aware that the living room and kitchen was the centre of the soryline, the other rooms made it seem so much more realistic. The set did not only appeal to the viual senses as a typical set would. What surprised the audience and I was the use of smells to appeal to our other senses too. When Mrs Boyle (Juno) was cooking saussages the familiar smell was strong throughout the whole theatre, reminding the audience of traditions in Ireland that have and will never change. The lighting on the stage was not particularly strong because the director aims to display the sadness and strain in the country. Overall the set really appealed to me and contributed so much to the production.

In my opinion the vision of Sean O'Casey was to show people the condition and way of Ireland at the time. The issues of war and economic strain are those that stood out for me most predominantly. The theme of war is portrayed the most through the character of Johnny. His distress and emotional pain shows the effect that the war is having on so many young men and families. The sounds that are played from the streets shows the constant and ongoing war. The death of Mrs tancred's son and the death of Johnny at the end of the play shows that the war is ruining and tearing families apart. This is seen in the Boyle Fmaily. The economic strain in the world of the text is shown by the way the Boyle family work on a day-to-day basis. The fact that their clothes are old and scruffy, their neighbours are begging them for their money back and Juno is too scared to face the shopkeeper herself because she has gotten so much stuff'on tick' shows that their situation is becoming worse by the day.

Overall I thoroughly enjoyed the play, especially because of the characters, the set and the way that the world of the text was portrayed. On a final note, I would most definitely conclude that the production of 'Juno and the Paycock', in my opinion, outshone the book by far.

Halloween in a submarine with Wolverine... and Grace (who has a face)

This week of TY has definitely been the best,
but sure every other week does be no less.
We made esters in the lab,
Well weren't they fab.

They were meant to smell like fruit,
They didn't, but we won't give them the boot.
We are  extremely sad,
But then we heard about them on the benecol ad.

So here is the good news,
We will be at the exhibition,
We promise it will be awesome,
That is our mission.

Fair play to the groups who made it through,
And hard luck to those who are feeling blue,
Your all winners in my eyes,
My hugs are the prize.

And not to be boasting,
but its the bank we will be hosting,
Could there be a better team,
Because I feel this is a dream.

Juno and The Paycock

Yesterday, we went to see a play,
We really had a fantastic day,
We left at 9 in the morning,
And we knew the day would not be boring.


We went to see a Yeats Exhibition to start off the day,
And it turns out his school report was less than okay,
It turns out his handwriting was pretty bad,
And the masks he used were absolutely mad.


We even saw the Bog Bodies too,
As soon as I saw them I was like 'ew',
Some of them even stilll had their hands,
Its beyond me how these bodies were saved by the land.


We even saw some Egyptian stuff,
but after that we had enough,
All of us Wollies reunited,
Mc Donalds was awaiting,
We were so excited.


After an ice cream, or two, or three,
Banba and fodla skipped skipped off with glee,
And we were left waiting for two girls in Disney.


It wasn't too long til we all got our seats,
We were so dissappointed that we couldn't have our sweets,
Our favourite character was the boy with no arm,
All us Wollies loved  his charm.


 A great day overall,
Got to go I am being called!

My Poems

Well as you know TY is not a doss year,
If you've read my blog, I've made that clear,
Its not like we have no fun,
That fun includes everyone.


As you know there is lots to-do,
100 projects to name a few,
In home ec we design a dress,
Its going well, but lots of stress.


Geography we are travelling 'round,
There is so much information  I have found,
In Tech we are making a key holder,
So much to-do I am scared to open my folder.


Enjoying this year like I never would have thought,
I better go and do a project before I get caught,
Projects don't get done all by themselves,
If only they did, maybe hire some elves.


I have finished another poem, all complete,
I won't finish this challenge until they accept defeat.

Well, I love food. I really do. I love cooking it, eating it. So here is my poem that I wrote about food for Blogging day.


I love food,
It puts me in a good mood.
It is always so tasty,
from sweeties to pastry.
I love Christmas dinner,
but it don't make you much thinner.


My Mam always shouts dinner is ready,
Its a race to the table, get ready and steady.
Lunch time in school we always have some fun,
It may be a food fight or a party with buns.
The table is raided and we are left with some crumbs, 
now we regret it, its gone straight to are tums.

Humpty Dumpty, Its Mini Company :)

Hey Fans,


Its the C-Dog here. Well hers is the story. We are doing a mini emergency kit for our mini COmpany. It wil contain all of the necessities that us gals need on a night out. It turns out that Orla wasn't so fond of our idea but we think that if we work really hard we can make a brilliant company. We love our idea because we are working with things that we know about. We know that on a night out we always regret that we didn't have another clip with us or that we had a plaster for the killer cuts on your tootsies. Nothing will stop us TYs!

Turas go Gaillimh - WOW

Okay well for those who know me I am a huge fan of Gaeilge. Like its my saol! When I grow up (tehe that sounds funny) I want to be a múinteoir Gaeilge! So when the opportunity arised to do a tionscnamh as gailge on anything you want - Mise = an-sásta. So me and my two cairde, Shauna and Laragh decided to go to TG4!
We left Cill Droichid at 6.30am.. (TUIRSEACH) and headed into Heuston Station to get a train at 7.30. Off we went on our adventure. We woke ourselves up with a cupan tae and some dairy milk. In Athlone the train stopped... and sin é! It broke down so we ended up getting to Galway ar an mbus and being an hour late. But that didn't kill the fun! A TG4 van collected us from the station and we headed to the studio! John who drove the van knew every thing about the teanga and about TG4! It was so suimiúil! We found out some really cool stuff ... but only you people who are as priviliged as I am to be in Eriú will find out!

I'm travelling around the world... from the computer room :(

Hey,


Well as one of our many projects we are doing a geography Project. So basically we get in groups, pick six countries ( 2 first worlds, 2 second worlds and 2 third worlds). So me and my geography buddy are going to Columbia, Egypt, Japan, Mexico, Switzerland and Zambia. It shall be epic! We are going to pick the randomest things to do in these countries... We gunna go Craaazaaay! The project is a bit hard but I am loving it... Fom diving with sharks in Zambia to eating sushi on mount Fuji - It will be a trip to remember.

Hey,
It has been a great weekend... Lots of socializing with my fellow TYs! To be honest I am kind of looking foward to getting back to school. I love having some fun with all our TYs. This week should be good lots of projects due and the young scientist is putting the skates on... If I here anything about a one-page proposal again I may burst... burst with scientific knowledge of course :P We are going to a mini company thingy in Naas too. For our Irish project me and my group are going to TG4 hopefully this week...

Recovering.. slowly but surely :)

Well this week I have decided to read some people's blogs... LIKE WOW! Some people have so many done and some people's are so funny... Making my works of art look bad... :( So far I am loving TY, lots of projects, but loving it!. Bada bababa Im lovin' it ;) I also realised who the loud class is this week... Definitely Banba, I love my class though! Still recovering from JC night and its my birthday today so thats a few hours less sleep ! I am sorry if I look like a zombie walking the corridors. Well I am off for a nap now... Maybe Mrs L won't notice!

Well, its official the Juior Cert is officially over. After a tired two days in Carlingford, Wednesday morning came with a bang. Classes creeped slowly by while we pulled in all the sympathy we could from teachers in order to get a doss class... SUCCESS! Finally we were called down to the school hall and nerves and excitement were high. As envelopes were handed out there were screams of delight from most people! It was time for the celebrations! A night in Time nightclub = AMAZING! Everybody had an amazing time ;) We danced like crazy people all night!
The last few days have been so good that I am sad that they are all over. :)


This week could not get any better!

Carlingford :O

Hey,
Well carlingford was absolutely amazing! It was quite possibly the best two days ever.. despite the early mornings and severe lack of sleep! We arrived on Monday and went to a challenge course and then did laser shooting in the forest! The laser was everybody's favourite. We dressed up in army costumes and may have put muck on our faces to blend in... yes we are civilised young women! :P Then we did Nightkine in the forest which was going through a forest (very windy) blindfolded and having to make our way through by talking to the people around us... It was sacry but very funny. That night we went through an underground tunnel too :) When we arrived back to the centre after too many walks up avery steep hill to the forest we had some dinner (Yumm....) and were delighted to meet the boys school from Drogheda... An epic night of rapping, fire shows, spine-tingling singing, craic and of course some talking to the boys! the night was not over at 11.30 when we went to bed though... Lots of food, magazines, giddiness and the beginning of what has become a very famous dance...


the following morning with sleepy faces and aching bones we set off orienteering. We literally crawled up mountains through puddles, bushes and sheep until we finally reached back for lunch. After lunch it was back up to the forest to do rock climbing and absailing! A great two days!

I do feel socially developed! :O

Yesterday class Eriú took part in a social development day with Austin. It was really fun. First we told wmbarassing stories about eachother to the class... Lets say that some where more embarassing that others. We then played games to find out what kind of person we were : Directors, Entertainers, Mediators and Organisers. To my surprise the results were pretty accurate! We did debates then and learned how to do a proper handshake. We all really enjoyed the day. We also learned a karate move that we were told would cheer us up on a bad day... so sorry if any TYs hit you walking down the corridors doing karate!
Another good day of TY :)

Thursdays are so fun! :)

So far TY has been great! But today was the highlight so far. In the afternoon we had a pilates class... which was less relaxing than we had thought, more hard work! It was so fun though... Then we went to our 1920s dance class which was such good fun. We learned how to do the Charleston dance and everybody got so into it... probably making fools of ourselves until we saw that we had a small audience at the library door.... Well that was embarassing. And to end the day nicely we headed off to our Photography class with Rob who takes the most Amazing pictures! Overall a great day, probably one of many this year! :)
