A LITTLE LOLLY GOES A LOOOOOONG WAY

About two weeks ago, the whole of TY hopped on a bus and headed off to town. We were selling lollipos around town to support the Oesophageal Cancer Fund. It was such a fun and rewarding day out! And people are so generous. Some of the girls even met Ronan O Gara and Cian Healy... I wasn't too happy when I found out that I didn't see them! 

I'd really love to do things like that again!

Last Week we had a work shop by a man called Dave! It was so much fun. We learned about all of the different drums and beats. We also sang loads of songs and stuff too. 
I felt a bit sorry for the rest of the school listening to our banging all day! I really enjoyed the workshop. My favourite part was 'WOOD PECKER' Haha. Lots of fun!


And also each of the classes were timed at the end of the day for cleaning up! And guess what? Eriu won!

Hello Again!

Well in Pe yesterday I was a bit bored because we were doing High Jump... and lets face it, if you are bad at it, its a recipe for embarassment.
So we asked if we could do the limbo!
So Georgia and I won!
That was a pretty big deal because I never win sporty things! The opportunities of TY...
Well Georgia and I want to have a TY 'OLIMBICS!

It would be embarassing if we held it and Georgia nad I were the worst... AWKWARD!

I have the Ballymaloe Flu

Hello Boys and Girls,
Well I am just back from Work Experience in Ballymaloe House! It was really great! I spent a day in the Cookery School (very intense but I learned so much), a day Gardening (Gardening is a lonely job), a day in the kitchen (pure heaven) and two days in the Dining Room (That was hard work but great fun).

I really enjoyed the week and people were so nice to me! Its more like a family!
I got free accomadation and food for the week which was so nice!
I made so many friends and I actually miss them loads. Lent went down the drain that week haha!

Only downfall was that I finished work at 4 and until I went to bed I didn't really have anything to do! Places like that are very quiet during the week!

The Super€uros Bank Launch

Hey Guys,
Well as most of you know I have a slight obsessiojn with the bank. I'm the bank manager this year and I really really love it so much. For me its the highlight of TY. We do all these great promotions and activities and we have so much fun. We have great prizes to!
Our bank launch which we have been planning for a really long time was held on february 23rd. We had the band the Original Rudeboys at the launch! They are really popular at the moment as they have a new album out and also their song 'Stars in my Eyes' hit number 2 on itunes. Check out the program made about the bank launch on kildaretv.com. We also had our own local 'Superhero' Johnny Doyle at the launch. He gave some great words of encouragement on banking. We really had the most amazing day! It was so overwhelming. Everybody got free poster and autographs!

We also had our Regional Finals this week. Boy was it nerve-wrecking, exciting and scary all rolled into one. I had to make a speech in front of so many people and I was so nervous! We all dressed up and had an amazing stand!

WE GOT THROUGH TO FINALS!
I was so happy!
Like unbelievably!
We got 100 euro each and a trophy!
We are now in the top 20 banks in the country. Finals are 25th April! In the Rds!

If anybody has any ideas on anything fun we can do please do so!

English Review - The Help

A Review of ‘The Help’ by Caitriona Eves

During the sixties, segregation was at its highest point. Blacks and whites were separated when it came to about anything. Water fountains, cinemas, and schools are some examples. The South was directly affected by this cultural trouble. Black women and men were degraded and forced to work under white men in horrible conditions. This world is portrayed so effectively in the novel ‘The Help’ by Kathryn Stockett.

Men worked in factories and labour jobs, while the women went from white family to white family cleaning the houses and raising the children. Many books have been written to express these human struggles, but nothing has been written in the same way as this.

The Help, written by Kathryn Stockett is an emotionally driven novel with exceptional characters, and an outstanding plot that centres on intense segregation issues.

Stockett was born and raised in Jackson, Mississippi, which is the exact setting of the book. Even though this is her first novel, it is clear she is a talented and creative author. Her experience with the subject is shown throughout the novel.

She herself had a black maid during this time named Demetrie, who she loved and cared about. Demetrie died when Stockett was 16. For many years, Stockett has wondered how Demetrie felt being black in Mississippi, working for a white family. According to Stockett, that is the reason she wrote this book, in the hope of finding out the answer within the characters she created. Her own life was the total inspiration for this novel and there is no doubt about it that this is why it has become such a huge success for Stockett, for individual readers and the world.

The novel splits between three major characters: Aibileen, an older black maid who has no husband and no children; Minny, Aibileen’s younger, close friend who is working to support her many children and abusive husband; and Skeeter, a determined, white writer who wants to make a difference.

Stockett starts the novel in Aibileen’s point of view, but throughout the novel she writes in the point of view of Minny and Skeeter as well. She is able to delve into the minds and emotions of these intriguing who play an important role in the plot.

The novel is written in a great way as we see each event or emotion in an aspect of three different characters in three different situations. We learn about each character as an individual and the three women as a group. We see the power and courage that this cultural segregation has driven into them.

Stockett tells the story in a ‘normal’ manner. She doesn’t express how wrong she feels the situation is but lets us figure it out for ourselves: my personal favourite characteristic of this novel. The three different characters, in my opinion represent the different opinions in time. Skeeter is a current day person, Aibleen, ahead of her time, and Minny realising the problem with the rest of the crowd.

The plots, descriptions and world of the text is outstanding as we see everything in a new light, bringing history together in a new way.

In my opinion and in the opinion of most, this novel is a ‘must-read’. This is a book that subtly shows the development of racial segregation in a light and interesting fashion.
